Me First!

Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

Matthew 10:37-42 was the Gospel reading at Mass last week, and it can be challenging to really take in. Jesus basically says that He comes first (which we already know) – that not parents, not even your children, should come before Him. It makes sense, but when I look at my children, it can sometimes be tough to love Jesus more, especially when I can hold them and talk to them in a way that feels more real – which means I need to do a better job of talking to Jesus more. I can easily say that I love Jesus more than my children, but do my actions and lifestyle reflect that? If I love Jesus more than anything, then that love should pour out to my children…which means I’m not getting as angry, frustrated, or impatient with them. That I’m able to continuously forgive them for making the same mistake over and over again  (no Joshua, pushing your sister is still not okay!). I pray that my children grow up to love Jesus more than they love me. I pray that they grow up to love Jesus, period. And I pray that  Jesus floods me with His love and patience to deal with these three beautiful, stubborn, wonderful, somewhat annoying people.
