In the Gospel of Mark (10:35-45), two disciples come up to Jesus and Him, “do for us whatever we ask of You.” Whenever I read this passage, I always think they sound like a couple of pompous jerks. Like, guys, don’t know you know who He is? Who the hell are you to be making demands??
And then I hold up that handy dandy selfie camera and realize I do that. ALL. THE. TIME. Especially when my kids don’t go to sleep right away.
(I didn’t intend to use Ben Stiller twice but they both work)
Even when I want to listen to God and do His will, I’m still like, “Okay God, tell me what to do, but tell me now and very clearly because I don’t want to sit here silently for too long.”
There’s a balance between asking God for the things that we want, but also trusting Him and recognizing we don’t know everything.
But in order to trust God more, we have to know God more. In order to know God more, we need to listen to God more. In order to listen to God more, we need to spend time with God more.
I always have to remind myself of the first line in Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God”! It is often hard to block out the incessant “noise” in our world today to be able to literally sit in silence with God.
