What a time we are in. I know there’s already been so much written and talked about in regards to the quarantine and COVID-19, but last night I was out to get some exercise, and I noticed the stars. I was praying while I was walking/jogging (mostly walking), and I kept unintentionally looking up at the stars. The beautiful stars that can only be seen at night (other than the sun of course, because if you can see the sun, it’s not night).
And we are living in a dark night now. Death, illness, isolation, unemployment – it is a challenging time for all. Yet many people I talk to are also seeing the silver lining – more time with family, more time to focus on what’s truly important and not being as distracted as before. Although we aren’t able to physically attend Masses/church, many people are finding time to spend with God. They are able to see God in the goodness of those who are being selfless.
So often we as humans turn back to God when we are in need, when we are suffering. We are able to see more clearly how much we need God, and it’s easier to see God in our darkness.
It’s like the stars in the night sky – we can see them at night and will take time to look at them and marvel at them. But even during the day, the stars are still out there, even if we can’t see them, even if we don’t pay them any attention.
I have been wondering during this time, that once we are not sheltering-in-place or quarantined or keeping a 6-foot distance, will we remember what’s most important? Will we still spend time with those most important to us, especially with God?
Will we remember the stars are still there when it’s light?
Beautiful reflection!
